In a society in which history is being cut from budgets in schools across the nation, this book brings to light why history is so important:so that we can learn about these forgotten stories and how they have shaped the nation and the world in which we live.Blackman does an outstanding job in telling the stories of the slavery that continued after emancipation that most people are not aware of. It is a very touching, dark, and real portrayal of life for African Americans in the Jim-Crow South. While I would have liked him to further explain when the actual freedom of some of these men actually did occur, and by what means, in further detail, I found the book thoroughly enjoyable. As a history undergrad, I believe that this book should be required reading in schools to teach Americans the true cruelty of the slavery that continued for so long in America.
